We are extremely pleased with this cooktop given all the features. Lots of heat from 15,000 BTU burner, well positioned (center) dual tier wok burner, full stainless look, everything except grates is stainless, 5 burners, instead of the common 4 on a 30" form factor and cast iron grates that allow for sliding pots across the surface. What we did not like were the plastic knobs: they look great but I feel they could have included something better. I assume it is a heat resistant laminate/composite so I am not sure about the melting but I think it should have been solid metal. We reduced 1 star for that. The wok ring would have made this back to 5 stars, but we can't fault KitchenAid for that as only the more expensive cooktops seems to get those included. A definite buy if have the same requirements as we have.

After much research we decided that the KitchenAid Architect II series was the one to get. It featured 5 burners of which the middle burner is a 15,000 BTU burner (18,000 BTU on 36" version) whereas most cooktops in this price range top out at 4 burners and 12,500 BTU max. It has the control knobs on the front and is a very industrial looking design. The grates are heavy cast iron and you get 3 of them. All in all, this one delivered on all fronts in the specifications that we set out. Upon receipt of the item, we found that the 1st rule of construction (closely related to Murphy's Law)applied to us as well: if something can go wrong or get complicated it will. And it did. The cut out dimensions of this cooktop did not fit the existing (and what we believed to be standard dimensions) in our countertop. This KitchenAid requires the following a cutout of 28.5" by 19.5". Of course this represented a horrendous problem in installation as we had to get the countertop opening cut out further. Anyway's: some masking tape, a pneumatic sabre saw and some saws and that was solved as well. It does not simmer out of the box - as a previous reviewer said, its low is not low enough. This is surprising for a relatively expensive cooktop from a reputable company, but there is a fix: The manual (available from the kitchenaid website) explains how to reduce the low setting. You take each knob off while the burner is on and turn a screw. You need a thin long screwdriver - I had to make one from a heavy wire hanger, filing the end to form the screwdriver blade, easier than it sounds.

The low setting is now acceptable, but not quite as low as I'd like, though I have not tried to readjust it. Small Than Kitchenaid 36 Gas Cooktop And Best Gas Range
We just updated our kitchen and went from electric to this gas cooktop. I really like the compact nature of this cooktop and the addition of a fifth burner. It heats anything very quickly. Maybe that's my problem, many things I cook need to heat up, then simmer braise at a lower temperature. Even the lower temperatures aren't low enough.. Example, I've tried to make rice several times since we've had this (since Christmas). It boils quickly, but when I reduce to the lowest possible simmer, it still overflows the pot. There has to be a solution for this - a simmer plate or something - but if they have that -- why wouldn't it be included in the package? I like the cooktop overall, but I really have to be careful with the heat. My split pea soup was on "low" and didn't stop boiling until I turned the gas off.
